Buying a commercial truck is a major business decision that should not be taken lightly. Before you buy, it’s important to understand the different types of trucks available, as well as the costs associated with each. Here are four key things to consider when shopping for commercial trucks for sale in San Diego:
Buying Versus Leasing
There are a few different ways to buy a truck for your business. You can buy the truck outright, lease it, or hire a trucking company to haul your cargo. Each option has its own set of pros and cons.
To buy a truck outright, you’ll need to factor in the cost of the truck, depreciation, and insurance. Depreciation is the loss of value of the truck over time, and insurance protects you in the event of an accident.
Leasing a truck is a cheaper option than buying, but you’ll have to pay the finance company your leasing fee every month. You should also factor in the cost of depreciation, insurance, and fuel. Overall, buying a truck gives you more control over the process.
Factors to Consider Before Buying
Before you buy a truck, make sure to consider the following factors:
- The size and weight of your cargo will affect the truck you need. You’ll need to decide how much cargo you can fit in the truck, and how much weight the truck can carry.
- How many miles the truck has on it will also affect the price.
- Older trucks have shorter lifespans, so you’ll have to factor that into your decision.
- Some features, like air conditioning, are standard on most trucks.
- Others, like a heavier capacity suspension, may be necessary for your cargo.
As previously mentioned, leasing a truck is a cheaper option than buying. The upfront costs are minimal and maintenance costs are included if a full-service lease is chosen. However, you will have to pay the leasing fees every month and you should factor in the truck depreciation, insurance, and fuel.
If you lease a truck, you have the option to buy it at the end of the lease. This is a good option if you plan to keep the truck for a long period of time.
Other Costs to Consider
These are just a few other costs associated with trucking. These include:
- Extended Warranties: Make sure you’re aware of the truck’s warranty, and factor that into your decision.
- Tires: You’ll need new tires every few thousand miles, and they can cost a lot of money.
- Insurance: Make sure you have the right insurance for the truck and your cargo.

by C&M Motors | Jun 21, 2021 | HVIP State voucher program
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and CALSTART have announced the reopening of the popular HVIP Incentive Program. This year’s program makes available $165 million to California-based businesses that will upgrade their fleets with new, zero-emission and near-zero-emission clean vehicles. This great program is a first come, first served opportunity to make electric and hybrid trucks as affordable as their fossil-fueled predecessors in an effort to reduce emissions in the state of California.
This year’s HVIP funds have 2 release dates: the first has already seen the funds exhausted, and the second starts on August 10th. Drayage trucks and Class 8 commercial trucks are exempt from the pause in support of CARB’s Project 800 initiative. This project has a goal of 800 zero-emission drayage trucks in 2021, advancing California’s clean transportation sector.
Greater vehicle options in CARB 2021 program is paving the way for more businesses and public fleets to embrace clean air vehicles as well as to help the market grow and accelerate these technologies.
Since its inception, HVIP has provided over $400 million in funding to help businesses and public fleets deploy more than 7 thousand clean air vehicles.
We are excited to help our local businesses be part of the 2021 HVIP program. We encourage you to call us to get onboard while funds are available. In addition to the immediate savings, the long-term savings and benefits are substantial. With fuel costs rising and savings on maintenance, this program is a huge benefit to our local San Diego businesses that need to upgrade or add to their existing fleets.

by C&M Motors | Mar 23, 2021 | Commercial Electric Trucks

Electric trucks provide reduction in greenhouse gas emissions which is especially beneficial in an urban setting. In fact, electric trucks have been shown to cut greenhouse gas emissions by a third or more over diesel trucks.
Other Benefits Electric Trucks Offer
Less Noise.
While this seems obvious, why is this a benefit? Lack of noise means they can operate at times when a diesel truck cannot. This can provide a significant benefit to businesses operating in congested urban areas with evening noise restrictions.
Regenerative Braking
An electric truck has a highly efficient drivetrain and offers energy recovery during braking. When measured together, the regenerative braking and super-efficient drivetrain can lead to about five times higher efficiency for an electric truck.
Alternate Energy Sources
If you drive a diesel truck, there is only one way to fuel your truck. Diesel. If you invest in an electric truck, you have more options. You can charge your electric battery with standard plugin, paid-for electricity OR you can invest in solar for your company which would significantly drive down the cost of operations for your fleet.
Why SEA Electric and C&M Motors

As we are all aware, 2020 was a tumultuous year…one that most of us would rather not repeat. Many businesses have been hit hard by the effects of the pandemic and some are struggling just to stay afloat.
At C&M Motors, we are looking at ways to help our local businesses with their transportation needs but in a creative and less costly ways. For many, it is imperative to have transport trucks to move goods to market, but the cost of a new truck may not be possible right now.
With that concern in mind, we have increased our inventory of quality, newer used trucks and are outfitting them for customers so they can continue to provide their services without the burden of a new truck loan or lease. All our trucks are inspected by trained technicians, made road-worthy and are backed by our maintenance team. Many are eligible for an extended warranty through the manufacturer, Hino.
Used Trucks Customized to Your Needs
Our used inventory is largely comprised of medium duty trucks which we can configure with racks, lifts, and other customizations to meet your transportation needs. If you need something special, whether it is a particular size truck body or special shelving inside your box truck for organization, we can make that happen.
We are hopeful with the vaccination process beginning, we will see the end of the pandemic soon. We are working hard to bring you creative solutions to bridge the gap until we resume normal business activities.
We wish you a safe and prosperous 2021 and encourage you to contact us for any of your trucking needs.

by C&M Motors | Feb 22, 2021 | Commercial Electric Trucks
Commercial truck fleets are beginning to embrace the benefits of electric trucks. While initial costs may be slightly higher, these vehicles generate significant savings in a very short period of time.
Reduced Fuel Costs
The most obvious benefit is the reduction in fuel costs. The cost to run an electric plug-in vehicle or even a hybrid is substantially lower than fueling a diesel engine. Larger businesses that choose to invest in solar can compound their savings by generating some of their electric power by placing panels on their roof.
In addition to going green and helping to reduce the carbon footprint, companies are embracing solar and transitioning to renewable forms of energy.
Reduced Maintenance Costs
The electric drivetrain is functionally simpler than the conventional drivetrain. The electric motor is the major moving part and does not require fluid replacements and other parts that tend to break down in a combustion engine. Even features like regenerative braking, reduce wear and tear on basic vehicle components bringing the maintenance costs down 50% or more for electric or hybrid trucks.
CARB compliance
The electric or hybrid truck also supports the California Hybrid and Zero-Emission truck Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP). The Fiscal 2020-21 Funding Plan for Clean Transportation Incentives was approved on December 10, 2020. The plan allocates $25 million from the Air Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) to HVIP. Details for the Fiscal Year 2020-21 are still being finalized but the funding is approved. The best approach is to work with an HVIP approved dealer, like C&M Motors, to be sure your planned purchases meet the criteria for the voucher program.
