Hino, Toyota Developing Class 8 Fuel Cell Electric Truck for North America


PLANO, Texas (October 5th, 2020) – With the rapidly expanding interest in heavy-duty electric trucks, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) and Hino USA have agreed to jointly develop a Class 8 fuel cell electric truck (FCET) for the North American market.

The companies will leverage the newly developed Hino XL Series chassis with Toyota’s proven fuel cell technology to deliver exceptional capability without harmful emissions. This collaboration expands upon the existing effort to develop a 25-ton FCET for the Japanese market which was announced earlier this year. The first demonstration vehicle is expected to arrive in the first half of 2021.

“A fuel cell powered version of the Hino XL Series is a win-win for both customers and the community. It will be quiet, smooth and powerful while emitting nothing but water,” said Tak Yokoo, Senior Executive Engineer, Toyota Research and Development. “Toyota’s twenty plus years of fuel cell technology combined with Hino’s heavy-duty truck experience will create an innovative and capable product.”

HINO TRUCKS ANNOUNCES "PROJECT Z" – Paving the Path to Zero Emissions October 05, 2020. Long Beach, CA – Hino Trucks announced, Project Z, the Company’s development path to zero emissions vehicles (ZEV), ranging from class 4 to class 8.


The live virtual event showcased the most comprehensive line-up of zero emissions trucks, partnering with technology leaders in advanced electrification drive systems.

The ZEV products ranged from a class 5 on a SEA Electric SEA-Drive® 120a on a Hino M5 chassis, up to a Hino XL Series class 8 tractor powered by Toyota’s Fuel Cell system (see Toyota/Hino joint press release for more detail). Additionally, Hino featured a battery electric class 7 tractor with Hexagon Purus’ full electric drive system, and a Hino XL Series class 8 box truck powered by Xos Trucks’ X-Pack battery and electric drive system. For the battery electric vehicles, Hino will look at both central drive motors and e-axles.

“Our holistic approach to working with technology leaders like Toyota, Hexagon Purus and Xos will result in a sustainable, low cost product line up that will meet the needs of our customers as our industry moves forward to zero emission vehicles. For customers ready to move in that direction now, the SEA Electric SEA-Drive® 120a paired with a Hino M Series chassis is commercially available today,” said Glenn Ellis – Senior VP of Customer Experience.

Hino Trucks Project Z advances Hino’s environmental leadership position, first established in 1991 with the global sale of its hybrid buses, and will consist of demonstration vehicles in the first half of 2021, customer demonstrations in 2022, and production prior to 2024.

Hino has unified its entire lineup of the new model year trucks, including model names, to make it even easier for you to match the perfect new Hino trucks to you and your business’ needs. Hino is excited to announce their new ‘M Series’ Class 4/5 COE’s and new ‘L Series’ Class 6/7 Conventional trucks, which combined with Hino’s recently launched ‘XL Series’ Class 7/8 vehicles, creates a cohesive family of commercial trucks.

The new COE truck models carry Hino M4 and Hino M5 badging with the number in the naming scheme representing GVW class. For 2021, these trucks have been upgraded with an all-new grille design complete with optional LED headlights and HD 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission with gear hold feature.  Available with the industry’s first OE fully integrated Lane Departure Warning System in this vehicle segment and then we get to the interior upgrades with a new shifter layout, steering wheel controls, an all-new gauge cluster including a 4.2” LCD multi-information display and driver’s seatbelt sensor.

The new Conventional line is represented by the Hino L6 and Hino L7 models boasting a bolder front fascia with optional LED headlights. The cab interior has been re-engineered with an automotive grade finish designed for commercial use and improved functionality, steering wheel controls, a large 7” LCD multi-information display, more storage and leg room.  Hino also takes your safety very seriously, which is why there are now an array of safety systems available on the Hino L Series including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Collision Mitigation System (CMS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Active Cruise Control (ACC) and driver’s seatbelt sensor. Adding even more functionality to your business, are new wheelbase options and extended cab and crew cab configurations.

The Hino XL Series also gets new advantages for the new model year including the extended cab and crew cab configurations and a snow plow package complete with an 18,000 lb. GVW front axle and front frame extensions. The Hino XL7 and XL8 will now come standard with a driver’s seatbelt sensor and available ACC building on the trucks’ ESC, CMS and LDW active safety solutions.


C&M Motors is now accepting orders for the new models.  The extended and crew cab variants have been added.

The Hino L Series and XL Series both have a 30” extended cab that will have seating for 5 and the 44” crew cab will have full-size doors and seat 6 passengers and provide the comfort of rear zone A/C and heat.
