For maximum productivity and organization in the field, customizing your service truck body can make all the difference. A well-designed truck body eases the day-to-day operations and enhances service quality. Customization offers an opportunity to create a service truck that aligns with your specific needs. However, customization is not a straightforward process; it involves considerations from planning to the fabrication process. Here’s what to consider when going through the custom truck fabrication process.
Compatibility with the Truck
The very first thing you need to consider is the compatibility of the body with your existing truck chassis. Different truck bodies are designed to fit certain types of chassis, and an incompatible match could lead to issues ranging from poor performance to safety risks. For example, if the service truck body is too large for the chassis, it could affect the balance and drivability of the truck. Consult the manufacturers or experts in the field to ensure that the service body you’re considering is compatible with your truck’s make and model.
Features and Add-ons
Customization is about making the service truck uniquely tailored for your specific needs. Do you need compartments for specialized tools? Would a crane be useful for your line of work? What about adding a ladder rack? The type of work you do dictates the features and add-ons that will make your service truck functional and efficient.
Some people need advanced locking systems for security, while others might require hydraulic lifts for heavy-duty tasks. Take the time to identify what features and add-ons will most benefit your operations and make sure to incorporate them in the customization process.
Weight and Load Capacity
Another crucial consideration is the weight and load capacity of the service truck body. Adding various compartments, heavy-duty lifts, and other features can significantly increase the overall weight. This could compromise the load capacity of the truck, which is especially crucial for those in industries like construction where heavy hauling is common.
The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) specifies the maximum weight a truck can safely carry, including its weight and the weight of the load. Make sure your customized additions do not exceed this limit, as it can affect performance and violate certain legal requirements.
Custom Body Fabrication Process
Understanding the custom body fabrication process is vital for ensuring that you get exactly what you want. The customization process can be extensive, involving consultations, design phases, material selection, and actual fabrication. Knowing how long each step will take, what materials will be used, and how the design aligns with your requirements will save you both time and money. Make sure you are involved throughout the process to ensure the final product meets your specifications.

When it comes to customizing your truck, choosing the right custom truck body can make a world of difference. A well-designed custom truck body not only enhances the functionality of your vehicle but also improves its aesthetics. However, with so many options available in the market, making the right choice can be overwhelming. Let’s review the factors you need to consider when getting custom truck fabrication services.
Purpose and Functionality
Before diving into the customization process, it’s crucial to determine the primary purpose of your truck. Are you using it for commercial purposes, such as transportation, delivery, or construction? Or are you looking for a more recreational vehicle for personal use? Identifying the purpose will help you choose the right custom body that caters to your specific needs.
Material
The material used to build the truck body plays a significant role in its durability, strength, and overall performance. Some of the popular materials used in custom truck bodies include:
Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to work with, aluminum is an excellent choice for those looking for a custom truck body with a sleek and modern appearance.
Steel: Known for its strength and durability, steel is often used in heavy-duty truck bodies. However, it is heavier than aluminum and can be prone to rust if not properly maintained.
Fiberglass: Fiberglass is another lightweight option that offers durability and a sleek appearance. However, it can be more expensive than aluminum or steel.
Payload Capacity
Consider the payload capacity of your truck before choosing a custom body. You should ensure that the body you select can handle the weight of the loads you intend to carry. It’s also essential to take into account the truck’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR), as these will determine the maximum weight the vehicle can safely handle.
Compatibility
Ensure that the custom truck body you select is compatible with your truck’s make and model. Compatibility is crucial for seamless integration and smooth functioning. Consult with the custom truck body manufacturer or a professional to ensure that the body you’re choosing will work well with your specific truck.
Customization Options
Custom truck bodies come with various customization options and parts to cater to your unique needs. Some of the popular customization options include:
- Storage compartments
- Ladder racks
- Crane systems
- Lighting and electrical systems
- Custom paint jobs and graphics
Manufacturer Reputation
Do your research and select a reputable custom truck body manufacturer. Look for reviews and testimonials from other customers to gauge the quality of their products and services. It’s also a good idea to check if the manufacturer offers warranties and after-sales support, as this can save you from potential headaches down the road.
Budget
Last but not least, take your budget into account when choosing a custom truck body. Customization can be expensive, but you should not compromise on quality to save a few bucks. Weigh your options carefully and choose a custom truck body that offers the best value for your investment.

Not all your truck upgrades can be off the shelf. Sometimes you need specialty work outside of standard use, such as uplifting the truck with a different body for new jobs or creating a specific kind of trailer. When you need special upgrades to your truck, that means going to a custom truck fabrication shop.
Custom fabrication work isn’t easy, and you need to know you can trust the shop to do it right. Here are some of the signs of a quality custom fabrication service.
Five Things You Want from Your Custom Truck Fabrication Shop
1 – Years of service
You don’t want to trust your truck to newcomers, no matter how earnest they might be. It’s just not worth the risk. Choose a fabrication shop that has years or decades of experience, to ensure they can do the job right.
2 – An attention to detail in design
You don’t want your truck to look like a hacked-up beater, no matter how much custom work has been done. A great custom fabrication shop doesn’t just do the work requested; they have a real attention to detail and make their work look like it was part of the truck all along.
3 – A wide range of equipment
Does your fabrication shop have a plasma cutting table? What about a press break, automated shears, or large metalworking saws? They should have a very well-stocked shop. Otherwise, they may not be able to do your work or will farm it out to third parties that you have no control over.
4 – User-friendliness
If you’re adding functionality to your truck, the controls and methods of usage are just as important as the parts being added. Talk to them at length about how their upgrades will be operated, to make sure it’s easy and convenient.
5 – Priority scheduling options
Trucks are working vehicles, and downtime is money wasted. Do they offer options for priority scheduling, or emergency work? Sure, it may cost a bit more, but sometimes the cost is worth the faster service.

What to Expect from a Custom Fabrication Expert
Fabrication services may be required for several reasons. Some requirements are for specialty structures like racks or doors. Some fabrication is done to repair your truck or trailer after an accident. Whatever the need, it is important to find a fabrication expert that understands precisely what you are looking for and transforms that understanding into reality.
When looking for custom fabrication services, here are some important aspects that should be considered from a professional.
Quality Workmanship
Precision and quality are essential for any fabrication service. Upfitting jobs should include everything from the metalwork to the fit and finish. All fabrication should look clean, professional, and as if it were part of the original design.
Scheduling
Fabrication is going to require downtime. Truck downtime can be expensive. How quickly can your fabrication specialist get you scheduled and how quick is the turnaround. More importantly, how well is the project communicated to you, so you schedule around the lack of truck and be assured of its completion.
Upfitting Experience
If you are spending money to upfit a truck, knowing the level of experience of the fabrication shop is important. How long as the shop been in business? Are they experienced in the type of custom work you are commissioning them to perform?
Customer Service & Communication
As with any business service, the custom fabrication shop needs to listen well, offer a professional recommendation, and provide good communication before, during, and at completion. Any specialty item can vary greatly in how it is implemented. Communication is key to setting your expectations and delivering to them or beyond.

At C&M Motors, we are looking at ways to help our local businesses with their transportation needs but in a creative and less costly ways. For many, it is imperative to have transport trucks to move goods to market, but the cost of a new truck may not be possible right now.

All our trucks are inspected by trained technicians, made road-worthy and are backed by our maintenance team. Many are eligible for an extended warranty through the manufacturer, Hino.
Used Trucks Customized to Your Needs
Our used inventory is largely comprised of medium duty trucks which we can configure with racks, lifts, and other customizations to meet your transportation needs. If you need something special, whether it is a particular size truck body or special shelving inside your box truck for organization, we can make that happen.
We are hopeful with the vaccination process beginning, we will see the end of the pandemic soon. We are working hard to bring you creative solutions to bridge the gap until we resume normal business activities.
